everyone loves to talk about snail memes in medieval art which is great because i really love the weird snail art, but can we also talk about how there is apparently a weird meme about rabbits having an advanced society but only using their skills to enslave other animal races and kill humans
like it starts off fairly innocuously with typical stuff, right? music and hunting, seems okay enough
but then there are also signs of conflict- rabbits and dogs fighting:
it seems that the rabbits win the conflict, though, because there are drawings of rabbits “taming” dogs to do their bidding
and then we see that they have also moved on to other animals, such as lions
this is where it gets kind of weird and especially fucked up, though, because there is…this???
finally, we see that the rabbits have moved on to humankind, and not even humanity is safe from their horrifying ways
moral of the story: monty python was right, y’all
To be honest knowing the Pythons they were probably directly referencing this phenomenon. They’re all obscenely clever and very highly educated and I’m pretty sure at least one of them might have encountered one of these manuscripts at university (Oxford and Cambridge have a large number of medieval manuscripts)
