Repeat after me: Professional recordings of musicals are the key to the revival of musical theatre within popular culture
I mean, duh.
The only reason I got into RENT was because I saw the official cast recording.
If the only way to see a show that you MIGHT enjoy is to pay for the plane tickets AND the hotel room AND the theatre tickets, most folk won’t ever go see the show.
If you sell a HD recording of show for $20 or something, people will be more likely to give it a go. People who like it will then be able to easily share it with other future customers, and they’ll also be more inclined to fork over the money to go see it in person.Plus you get a massive boost in revenue from the sales of the recordings.
Seriously, as much as I love Broadway musicals, the industry is so out of touch because they’re under the impression that if they record Broadway musicals and release them on blu ray, it’ll hurt ticket sales of the live musicals. Can you stop to think about how ridiculous that logic is? If fans are dedicated to a certain musical, band or artist, then they’ll pay to see them. I have a DVD of Little Shop of Horrors, but that didn’t stop me from seeing it when it came to my city. I saw it live because I was a fan of the movie. If they ever released a live recording of Hamilton on blu ray, I would buy it, and when a live production eventually comes to my country, I would fly interstate to see it. Lots of other fans would do the same thing. It’s the equivalent of artists and bands releasing blu rays of their live concerts. Fans buy the blu rays because they like their work, then when they find out their favourite artist is coming to their city, they’ll buy a ticket.
It’s like saying that musical artists shouldn’t release albums because it might hurt the sales of their concerts
