I just got back from seeing It.
I loved it. It was great. For me anyways. It was creepy and well written (better written than the miniseries imo) BUT I’ll still be able to sleep tonight I think. I’m home alone and I’m not seeing Pennywise peeking out from under my bed (though hell no I’m not going under there tonight.)
Call me crazy or a coward, but I really don’t like horror films that make me afraid to be alone. Because -duh- I live alone and I don’t want to be afraid in my own damn home. I prefer my horror films creepy and eerie and telling a decent story and not just making me deeply unsettled for the next few days. I know people like that in their horror, but I don’t, so for me, I loved it. The kids were great and *spoilers* seeing 7 pre-teens beat the fuck out of an evil clown with a bunch of blunt instruments ahhhhhhhh warms the cockles of my withered heart. No cheap cliffhanger, because why would you need one? We already know the sequel is coming, so why bother? Just a creepy laugh at the end and that’s that. And very few cheap jump scares. There were jump scares, don’t get me wrong. But they felt natural and like fit into the story. They weren’t there for a cheap scare. The writing was decent, and that’s mostly what I was looking for. I love Tim Curry, and his Pennywise is fucking iconic, but I felt the writing was stronger in this movie.
Those are my initial thoughts anyway. I was pleased with it.
