Getting tired of the minimalism videos in my youtube feed. I like declutter videos but minimalism is not the only way to live. And these people always want me to get rid of my books. Lol yeah fuck that. (And “who watches dvds anymore just stream it” lady – we need to talk.)
Especially the “how to cope when the person you live with is not a minimalist.” There’s a wide gap between minimalism and hoarding. If you can’t stand anything more than minimalism then don’t waste someone’s time.
Yeah, I’d love to see someone streaming something on our sub 1mpbs connection. Also, I don’t want to have to rely on the things I want to watch always being available online. What about when the service decides to remove them because they’re not popular enough, and so on?
Also, yes, books!!!
The things I like to watch tend to fall under a genre I like to call Weird Niche-y Bullshit. Ridiculously old shows, or really cerebral stuff or kids shows from the 90s that nobody else remembers, Canadian horror series, 60s soap operas about vampires, etc. Most of this stuff is not streaming on legit sites so I either have to get it on dvd or pirate it. Some things aren’t even on dvd. (So Weird, I’m looking at you.)
It would have blown that girl’s mind if she knew I still have vhs tapes and 2 vcrs. But some movies I even have on both dvd and vhs because the dvd is better quality but also has scenes removed so the only way to watch the theatrical release is on vhs. Also…old school previews.
Same with books. One video said you can just borrow a book from the library if you want to reread it. Pretty sure my local library doesn’t have The Archaeology of Garbage or any of the other obscure text books I’ve collected lying around but thanks for playing.
And you are so right about not wanting to depend on an Internet connection to watch things. I don’t live out in a rural area but my connection here isn’t great and my computer is so slow. And about stuff getting removed. Golden Girls is only streaming on hulu so having physical copies just makes it easier to access.
I don’t even want to get into how difficult minimalism can be if you’re broke. Maybe I didn’t need 2 toasters or 2 hair dryers, but I’ll be glad I have them when one craps out at the worst possible moment. For some people “just go buy another one” isn’t an option.
