how did barnabas get money in 1967?

i mean, the collins’ are rich but they never gave barnabas and liquid assets or cash.

when he shows up he claims he has all this cash, but like. he died 200 years ago.

and i know he has these hidden jewels to sell and all that but still

its implied that he has much more money barnabas couldnt have put THAT much into jewels in 1795 right?

anyway

I wonder how much money he could have needed. He wasn’t paying rent at the old house and it’s not like he had a utility bill. And as a vamp he didn’t need food except for Willy. If they’d had even a small sack of precious stones he might have been able to sell them for a decent chunk of cash, but where would he have gone for that? Maybe Willy told him where he could go, since he’d have no way of knowing himself, but you’d think a spectacularly creepy man attempting to exchange ridiculously old gems for cash would be just a tiny bit suspicious.

I did just realize though, Barnabas could have no way of fully understanding 1960s money. I bet if he ran into a clever broker he probably got screwed.

Well, Barnabas had to pay for a) suits, b) candles and c) all that Mad Science equipment down in the basement… and I suppose he had to feed and clothe Willie, too!

(And I recently finished watching the 1995 plot where he said Elizabeth had given him the title deeds to the Old House.  Quite a gift for someone who just shows up and announces himself to be a long-lost cousin from England – but wouldn’t that mean he had to pay taxes on the property?)

I think property taxes vary by state. A lot of that stuff, the candles especially would have been very easy for Willy to steal. The Mad scientist stuff Julia probably had in a basement somewhere. Or she pilfered it from Wyndcliffe.

That begs the question though, who told Barnabas how banking and taxes work? Maybe he got a couple thousand dollars selling the jewels and Liz taught him how to invest it.
